Electrical Interfaces

The OBD-II specification is the same for all vehicles 1996 and newer, but the electrical characteristics of the communication bus for relaying the OBD-II information will vary. Therefore, the ProScan software can be used to analyze any OBD-II vehicle providing that there exists an electrical interface to convert the vehicle's communication format into that of a computer's serial port (RS-232).

ProScan currently has interface hardware for the following electrical formats:

VPW Variable Pulse Width Modulation
PWM Pulse Width Modulation
ISO International Standard

Determine Interface from Connector Learn how to determine which electrical interface you should use by looking at the vehicle's 16-pin OBD-II connector.

Note: Vehicles 2003 and newer are beginning to support a new format known as CAN (Controller Area Network). ProScan does not currently have a CAN interface, but work is underway.
